Multi-Touch Screen

This is a project that introduced me to working on interesting engineering concepts. ECE Illinois graduate student Erik Johnson had an idea where you could hook up infrared LEDs onto glass and have a webcam with an infrared filter detect where the fingers are located when you touch the screen.  My share of the work involved designing a portion of the multi-touch screen infrastructure and hardware because the year before, it was constructed out of flimsy rulers and PVC pipes.

One of the challenges we faced was getting the webcam to accurately detect the fingers on the screen.  We learned that the user has to wet their fingers in order to have complete reflection of the light.  Erik also created a finger painting program, using OpenCV, in order to demonstrate the practicality of the system.
Here's a video of Erik presenting our project:
We also won 1st place for the Encore Project category at Engineering Open House 2009!
